Enable MP3 Ringtones on your LG Scoop AX260
September 3rd, 2008 | by TK |Having a few problems using your own MP3′s as ringtones on your LG Scoop AX260? Due to apparent legal restrictions, you are not able to add MP3s as ringtones since they could be downloaded illegally. Fortunately, below is a step-by-step guide to using your own songs as ringtones for ‘technically free’ (since the only thing you have to pay for is web access), without the use of a USB data cable and/or BitPim.
First off, you’ll need the following things to accomplish this:
- The AX260 has a web browser, but you’ll need the Web Browsing service activated for your carrier. I’m assuming Alltel since the LG Scoop is their name for the model. It will cost $1.99 for one day of web service or $5.99 per month.
- An account registered at Ventones.com.
- An MP3 of your choice.
Once you have all 3 things:
- Go to http://www.ventones.com/make-free-ringtone.aspx and browse for the MP3 you want to use as a ringtone.
- Once the MP3 is uploaded you’ll be presented with a slider tool that allows you to pick a section of the song that you want to use. Also boxes where you put in the song title and artist. Once you have found the section of song you want, click on the “Create tone” button.
- Next screen will give you a choice of different ways you can get your tone. Ignore this page and click on My Ventones at the top of the page. You should see the song you just uploaded.
- Click on the title or artist and at the next page, scroll to the bottom and click ”Send to phone“. Alltel users should use the second option on the next page.
- You should get a text message with an URL (web address) and it will say “Open the link below“. On your AX260 cell phone, click on Options and then scroll down to “Go to website“. It should display the URL again and press OK until it says “Downloading…“. It will automatically download into your My Audios folder, which you can then enable as a ringtone.
Update: It appears Alltel has blocked the Ventones website from the phones of some users. This is most likely so you have to buy ringtones from from or 3rd party vendors associated with the company. Contact Alltel and let them know how displeased you are with this. Only if enough people complain will they do something about it.

it won’t let me scroll down to the link in the message, so i manual enter it in the browser…
and then it plays the song, and i go to save it, and it tells me the file is too big for my cache.

@haley – Make sure when you get the message, you are hitting the “Options” button (most upper right) on your AX260 and then down to the option “Go To Website”.

@Ed – If Windows doesn’t automatically install the drivers when you use the USB cable you may have to search for “lg ax260 usb drivers”.
This might help: http://www.futuredial.com/support/download/USB_Drivers.asp or http://www.downloadatoz.com/driver/item_225362.html
Please post a comment if this does not fix your driver issues.

@Greg – After you’ve uploaded your song, picked the song title and artist and it goes to the next page, you must ignore this page and click on “My Ventones“. There you will see your uploaded song, which you must click on, then the “Send to Phone” button, which is about in the middle of the page. Now you will be able to go to the URL given.

@Jon – Sorry, not that I’m aware of. As far as I’ve encountered there is no way to use mp3s as ringtones or even move DRM protected files about your phone. Without the use of third party software, that is.

@jimmy – If you followed the instructions completely this is most likely because you need a Micro SD card for your Scoop.

@Gordo – I’ve contacted Alltel asking why Ventones.com is now blocked. I would suggest others experiencing the same problem to do the same. If it’s a bug, it needs to be fixed. If it’s intentional they need to know it’s unacceptable for a service we pay for.
