Create free ringtones from your own songs
May 12th, 2008 | by TK |With Mobile17 you can create ringtones from your own music files. Where ringtone providers will charge you an arm and a leg, Mobile17 lets you upload an mp3/wav of your favorite song, then pick a clip out of the song. It then sends you the file, through a picture e-mail or something similar where you can select it to play as a ringtone. They claim to be compatible with over 95% of available cell phones so chances are you won’t have a problem being able to upload and create your own free ringtones. The wait time can be over 2 hours, but if you donate some money they will give you ‘Express’ credits, or you could always buy a subscription.

I went to check it out figuring it would save me time from my usual ritual of using Audacity to decode, edit, then re-encode my songs into ringtones, but for some reason I’m not interested in registering for a service like that. I guess I assume it should be like the photo upload service Imageshack.us, since it’s offering the service for free.
Do they want to keep tabs on me? Is it useful, i.e. It keeps previously created ringtones in storage so I can have them resent to my phone, friend’s phone, new phone, etc…?
I’ll keep it in mind, but don’t figure I’ll be signing up anytime soon. Thanks for sharing though!
